William Harry Webb

William was born on 15 April 1894 in Preston Brook. he was one of seven children to William and Elizabeth (nee Wilkinson) Webb. His father was born c1846 in Preston Brook and worked as a warehouse porter. His mother was born c1856 in Hatton. William’s older siblings were all born in Preston Brook – Arthur c1878, Fred c1879, Beatrice c1881, Elizabeth c1883.

By 1911, William, Arthur and their parents were living in one of the cottage sat Tunnel End and William was unemployed. He later found work manufacturing electric cables, possibly in Helsby.

He enlisted in Helsby with the Cheshire Regiment, service number 65066. He was still away on active service in the autumn of 1918.

In 1921, he married Emily Gladys Yates who had been born in Llandudno c1892. In 1911, she was an actress in the theatre and living in Chiswick. Both her father, George and brother, George, were musicians in the theatre.

By 1939, William and Gladys were living at 6 Brook Terrace in Runcorn, where William was employed as a boiler fireman.

he died on 9 May 1973, aged 79 and Gladys died on 28 November 1981, aged 89. At the time she was living at Sherwood Court, Lower Robin Hood lane, Helsby.
