John W Cartwright was born in 1890, the son of William and Eliza Cartwright. William was a cabinet maker and the family lived with his parents, John and Mary, who ran a grocer’s shop in the village – the same premises as the current Village Store. John W had two siblings, Mary b1887 and Ernest b1893.
By 1911, Eliza was a widow, but had become the shopkeeper. John was a cabinet maker and Ernest a clerk.
John joined the Monmouth Regiment in April 1915, going out to the front in August that year. After just two weeks, he transferred to the South Wales Borderers. At the end of 1916, he was invalided out of the army with rheumatism and trench fever. He spent some time in a hospital in Old Trafford.
He returned to Moore and on the1939 register is recorded as being married to Elizabeth, although no details of the marriage have been found. He was still a cabinet maker, but also a motor driver.
John died in 1940, aged 49 years.
