A Jones

It is possible that the A. Jones, whose name appeared in an article in the Parish Magazine for Daresbury in August 1946, was William Arthur Jones.

The magazine article was reporting on an event held on Thursday June 27th of that year, for men and women of Hatton who had served in H. M. Forces during WW2.

There was no A. Jones in Hatton at that time, but William Arthur Jones appeared on the 1939 Register for Daresbury, living at Little Hall Lane Farm, very close to the boundary with Hatton.  However, by 1945, according to the Electoral Roll, he was no longer in the parish.

William Arthur Jones was born on 8th September 1916, at Warrington, the son of William Henry Jones, who was born at Wrexham, and his wife Margaret, who was born at Warrington.

The 1921 Census recorded the family as living at Cuerden Hall Lodge in Thelwall, Cuerden Hall at the time being the home of Lady Densham.  William’s father was a domestic gardener and there was an older brother called James who was 18 years of age.

In 1938 William Arthur Jones married Annie Worrall who was born at Stockton Heath.

The 1939 Register recorded the couple as living at Little Hall Lane Farm in Daresbury, where William Arthur was employed as a haulage contractors’ motor driver.  They had no children at that time, but would have a son and two daughters in the next five years.

William Arthur Jones died in 1987 at the age of 70 years.

It is not known in which branch of H. M. Forces he served.

If anyone has any knowledge of his WW2 service, please contact Daresbury District Heritage Group.
