Wilfred Meredith was born on 6th January 1915 at Hatton, the son of Joshua Meredith and Frances Caroline (nee Partington), who were both born in Hatton. He had an older brother Joshua Norman and an older sister Hilda. Their father was a domestic gardener and the family lived in Factory Yard in Hatton.
In 1913 another sister named Nora was born.
Sadly, the same year that Wilfred was born, his mother passed away at the age of 29 years.
Wilfred attended Hatton Infants School and then Daresbury School from August 1923.
In 1921 Wilfred’s father married again, to Elizabeth Ann Parker, who had a daughter from her first marriage, Frances Parker. The family continued to live in Factory Yard, the father being employed as a labourer at the Corporation Gas Works on Mersey Street in Warrington.
The 1939 Register of England and Wales recorded Wilfred’s father and stepmother living in Hatton, next door to Joshua Norman and his new wife, his stepsister Frances Parker, in Hickson’s Cottages. Wilfred was living with his brother and sister-in-law and was employed as a café waiter.
It is not known if Wilfred married.
Joshua Norman Meredith served in World War Two.
Wilfred’s father and stepmother died in 1952 and 1955 respectively.
Wilfred Meredith passed away in June 1999, living in Appleton. He was 84 years old.
It is known that Wilfred Meredith served in the Second World War, as his name is mentioned in an article in the Parish Magazine for Daresbury in August 1946, when presentations were made to the men and women of Hatton who had served in H. M. Forces.
However, it is not known in which branch of H.M. Forces he served.
