Herbert Green was born on 3rd February 1913 at Hatton, the sixth son of Albert Green and Harriett (nee Maddock). His parents were both from Daresbury parish. He was their sixth child, with an older brother called Albert Noel (who also served in World War Two). Sadly, the parents had lost four other sons (Wilfred, Harold James, George, and William Thomas) in the first decade of the century since their marriage in 1902. Albert Green was a waggoner on a farm and the family lived at Factory Yard.
Sadly, Herbert’s father Albert died in 1914 at the age of 36 years, leaving Harriett a widow in her early 30s with two very young children. Harriett’s extended family lived in Hatton so would have supported her and her two boys.
The 1921 census recorded Herbert, aged eight years old, as not living at home with his mother and brother in Hatton, but was being cared for by his aunt and uncle, Clara Fleet (nee Maddock) and her husband George Fleet. They lived in Dunham Hill near Helsby and had two sons called Thomas and John, who were at school with Herbert. Clara Fleet was one of Harriett’s younger sisters and had previously lived in Moss Lane in Moore with her husband and child.
By 1939 Herbert was employed as a farm labourer and was now living again in Hatton with his mother Harriett and brother, Albert Noel. By this time, they had moved to Goose Lane. While the two brothers were on war service, Albert Noel’s wife Alice went to live with Harriett.
Their mother died in 1944 at the age of 65 years.
Herbert Green never married. He died in late 1980 at the age of 67 years.
It is known that Herbert Green served in the Second World War, as his name appeared in the Service Register section of the Electoral Roll for Hatton in 1945. His name is also mentioned in an article in the Parish magazine for Daresbury in August 1946, when presentations were made to the men and women of Hatton who had served in H.M. Forces.
However, it is not known in which branch of H.M. Forces he served.
If anyone has any knowledge of Herbert’s WW2 service, please contact Daresbury District Heritage Group.
