George Beattie was born on 24th April 1895 at St Bees in Cumberland. His parents were Jonah and Jane Beattie. The father was born at Broughton in Cumberland in 1867 and the mother, whose maiden name was Todhunter, was born in 1865 at St Bees.
The Beattie family would eventually have six children: in addition to George there was William who was a year older than George, John who was two years older, Annie born in about 1898, Mary born about 1900 and Jonah born in 1903.
The 1901 Census recorded the family as living near Cockermouth in Cumberland, at 5 Buchanan Terrace in Ellenborough. Jonah senior was a colliery shiftman.
By 1911 the family had moved to Lea-By-Backford near Chester. The father was a farm bailiff, John and William were horsemen, George was a railway store assistant and the three younger ones were at school.
In 1915 George married Evelyn Lowery. She was born at Kimbleworth in County Durham in 1893. They were married at Chester-le-Street.
George served in the Great War as a sergeant in the 11th Cheshire Regiment. His service number was 263015. It would appear that no service records survived for him. He was recorded on the absent voters list for Aston Grange in 1918. After the war the couple would appear to have moved up to County Durham.
George and Evelyn had four children: Una J. who was born in 1917 at Chester-le-Street, but who died later that year, William and Christopher Lowery who were twins born in 1919 at Chester-le-Street and Elizabeth W. who was born at South Shields in 1927.
By 1939 they had moved to Cheshire again and were living on Park Road in Altrincham. George was working as a Chief Conservative agent and was a member of the Army Officers Emergency Committee. Evelyn was a housewife and their daughter was at school. It is not known what the sons were working as, but it is known that Christopher L. died in World War Two whilst on war service.
Evelyn passed away in 1945 at the age of 51 years.
George’s father and mother died in 1946 and 1947 respectively.
George Beattie passed away in early 1962 in the Manchester area, at the age of 66 years.
