Lancelot Joseph Priestly

Lancelot was born late in 1897 in Runcorn to where his family had moved from Preston Brook. His Father Thomas Henry (b.1857 in Preston Brook) worked as a clerk for the Canal Company, whilst mum Martha (nee Ollier. b.1858 Stoke, Staffordshire) looked after the household. Lancelot’s sister Marion Ollier was born in 1882 in Preston Brook, as were brothers Frank Perrin (b.1884) and Donald Hibbert (b.1891).
In the 1901 Census the family was living in Waterloo Road, Runcorn. Frank was now a fitter’s apprentice and Marion was a teacher at the local board school.

Marion got married in 1907 to Sydney A. Buckley a cost clerk at an iron foundry in St. Helens, Lancashire. By the 1911 Census, Marion had given birth to a baby boy named John Stephen Henry.
Back in Runcorn Frank had also left home, he was a 4th engineer aboard a ship berthed at Roath Basin, Cardiff. Donald was now an analytical chemist, whilst Lancelot was still at school.
Come WW1 all three boys ended up in the army. Frank joined the Cheshire Yeomanry, Donald went into the Royal Engineers.

At the start of the war Lancelot was still a scholar. He managed to enlist on 6/2/1915 at the Walker Art Gallery Army Medical Board, when he was still 17 and a student at Liverpool University. He was put on the reserve for the 4th Bn Cheshire Regt. He was actually mobilized on 5/1/1917 with the Regt. No. 243662. At this time he gave his address as living with his parents at Brook House, Preston Brook. After his initial training he was as an appointed ‘for the purpose of bettering n.c.o.s schooling’. On the 11th March 1918 he was transferred to the 5th Bn. Cheshire Regt and en route to France. Then within 4 days he was a sapper in the Royal Engineers (Regt. No. 360992) Field Survey Company. Lancelot was finally given his 28 day demob leave in March 1919.

On the 16th Dec 1927 Lancelot boarded the P&O ship ‘Narkunda’ in London and set sail for Sydney, Australia. In 1930 he was living with his brother Donald (who had emigrated in 1926), in Wrights Road, Drummoyne, Sydney.

Lancelot married Ada Toroy Brownett (b. 19/7/1906 in Queensland) in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1929. In the 1949 Electoral Rolls they were living in Bondi Beach and Lancelot was a ‘munition worker’ whilst Ada was on ‘home duties’.
