Alfred Arthur Isherwood was born in Stockton Heath on 2nd November 1897. He was the son of Arthur Isherwood (born Stockton Heath) and his wife Margaret (nee Povey) who was born in Hatton.
In 1901, Alfred was living at 49, Bostock Street, Stockton Heath with his parents and his siblings Annie M.( 8), Herbert P.(7), Albert J.(5), William H.(1)and Frank(5 months). His father was a railway carter.
A decade later, he was living at 49, Heath Street, Stockton Heath. Herbert had left home and the family had been added to with Lilly Elizabeth (8), Wilfred (7), Levi George (5), Maggie (3) and Edward (1). The parents had had 12 children, but one sadly died before 1911. The father was now a gardener.
Alfred served in the Royal Field Artillery in the Great War. His service number was 12555 according to the absent voters list on the electoral roll for Hatton in 1919. He was a lance bombardier. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star. He had not appeared on the electoral roll in Hatton previous to 1918, but returned there after the war.
He married Florence Irene Holden in late 1919 at Warrington, yet in the next five years his name appeared alone in Hatton. In 1925 he was living with Florence at Cobb’s Cottage, Appleton-with-Hull. By then they had Edna, born 1920, Dorothy H., born 1921 and Alfred G., born 1925.
According to the 1939 Register, Alfred was living with Florence and the children in Chapel Lane, Appleton Cross. He was employed as a road foreman and was also at some time a gardener for Greenall Whitley and Co. Ltd.
Alfred died on 24th September 1965, having lived on in Chapel Lane since the Second World War. He had been a keen member of Stockton Heath Pensioners’ Bowling Club and followed rugby league. His funeral was held at Holy Cross Church in Appleton Thorn, prior to burial at Appleton churchyard. He was 67 years old.
