Edward London
Edward London was born in Warrington on 2 February 1895. His father was George and his mother Mary Ann. Edward had at least four brothers and one sister. His brother John, b1899, also served in the war. The family lived in Milner’s Cottages, Runcorn Road, Moore. In 1911, Edward was an apprentice printer at the Warrington Guardian offices.
His name appears on the Roll of Honour in Daresbury Church and he served with the Royal Artillery and saw action at Gallipoli, the Dardanelles, Egypt and Mesopotamia. He was wounded when crossing the River Tigris.
After the war, he returned home and worked on the railway for over 50 years, before retiring in 1960. He met Elizabeth J Evans when she was assistant manageress in the refreshment room at Bank Quay Station.
They were married at St James’ Church, Bangor in 1921. The couple lived at ‘Cartrefle’, 216 Runcorn Road and the 1939 census tells us that they had a son, George Glyn, born on 15.2.1924. They also had a further son and daughter.
Edward died in Warrington in 1980, aged 85 years.
