Walter James Cartwright

Walter James Cartwright was born in Moore on 19 December 1892. He was the middle son of James and Sarah Jane and brother of John Henry and William Massey. All the boys served in WW1. They lived at Fernbank, Moore.

Walter was a grocer. He enlisted on 3 August 1915, joining the Royal Field Artillery. His regimental number was 104873.  In May 1916 he was promoted to corporal and then to sergeant two months later. He was Battery Quartermaster Sergeant and as such, would have been responsible for supplying the men with clothing and light equipment from the stores.

In 1917/1918, he served with the British Expeditionary Force in France. He suffered a shrapnel wound to his chin in October 1918, but returned to action in December.

Walter was demobilised in 1919 and returned to Moore. The following year he married Nellie Forster and they had a son, James, in 1924.

Walter died in 1971, aged 79 years.
